Portuguese Carols and Songs. This is a collection of Christmas songs sung in Portuguese-speaking countries (Portugal and Brazil) during the Christmas season.
On Christmas Eve (Vspera to Natal), whole families gather around the Christmas tree in their homes and await the arrival of midnight to go to church for Midnight Mass (Missa do Galo). Throughout the evening, Portuguese drink a traditional mulled wine, usually made with a young red wine with honey and cinnamon.
Very often under the Christmas tree arranges a crib or “presepio“. At Christmas, the children get up early in the morning and run to the fireplace. There are large socks gifts left by Santa Claus (Papai Noel). Festive Christmas dinner is a feast for the whole family. Typically, in the family senior’s house. The main dish is stuffed turkey “peru”. It can also be a chicken or chicken with chestnuts, raisins and almonds. The Portuguese haven’t the tradition of singing carols – they mostly have Christmas songs translated into Portuguese from English.
